Creating the Beast
Like all new boats, the devil is in the details. There is the base price of the boat, a mandatory option (why not put it in the base price), a ton of factory options and a ton of dealer options. The final delivered price, not including owner supplied items, increased the price by 50% over the base price. Over 50 items were added. Shipping and commissioning are always extra – and expensive. The most expensive additions, and I can’t image a boat being delivered without most, include a generator, a watermaker, air conditioning, electronics. Solar panels, a dinghy and outboard, faux teak decks and the list goes on and on.
The process, although expensive, is a lot of fun. With each item comes several decisions. For example, the watermaker. Do you want it factory installed, installed by the dealer or by a third party? Are you happy with the factory options? Do you want 12V or 120V? What capacity?
Fortunately, there is a Saona 47 Facebook group that shares lots of information. Some forums are less useful as there is a lot of opinions without knowledge out there. The EQUIPMENT section of the site discusses some of the major systems. I’ll discuss more in future posts.
